Smog Test FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to smog checks, Simply Smog has the answers for you.  Below you will find some general questions and their answers.

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog check exemption?
All vehicles are required for smog inspections except hybrids, electric, natural gas powered (with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001lbs or more), motorcycles, trailers and 1975 models or older.  There are no military exemptions for smog inspections.

If my car is new, am I required to get the biennial smog inspection?
Smog Tests are mandatory on vehicles 6 model years or older. If your vehicle is registered in an area that is subject to the biennial smog certification program, then you are required to send proof of a smog certification every other renewal period.

I want to sell my car. Who is responsible for a smog inspection after it is sold?
The seller is required to give the buyer smog inspection certification at the time of the sale.  Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date they are issued.  Smog certifications are not required for transfers of any motor vehicle that is four or less model years old.

If a family member gave me a car, am I required to do a smog inspection?
If a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parents, grandparent or grandchild gives you a car and the car is currently registered in California, you are entitled to an exemption from the smog inspection.  Any family member that was not listed here is not exempt and will have to obtain a smog inspection certification.
